It has been 30 anniversary after the original Toy Story film was released, establishing the animation giant as a major animation studio and introducing audiences to beloved characters like the cowboy doll (the actor) and Buzz Lightyear (the voice talent), who are now household names.

Coming in 2026, the next chapter is set to arrive. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 landed this week, providing a brief look into the storyline but leaving fans curious how it will resolve the ending of Toy Story 4.

Bonnie's New Toy: A Frog-Shaped Tablet Frightens the Gang

The preview shows the young girl — who inherited the toy collection when he left for college — getting a brand new plaything, one that terrifies the familiar toy group. She gets her initial digital gadget, and she is thrilled about it.

Presumably, the amphibian-inspired device will animate just like Bonnie's other toys. Still, the characters seem to view it as a threat intending to supplant them, which it probably is.

Woody's Return: Mysteries from Toy Story 4

One thing the trailer avoids is what Woody is returned with his friends in Bonnie's room. The end of Toy Story 4 depicted him set off on a fresh journey with the shepherdess (the actress), journeying with a carnival and assisting prize toys locate loving owners.

Certainly, Pixar will address the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the film. Witnessing him show up in Bonnie's room without warning is somewhat puzzling, though. It also makes us wonder whether his partner will have returned with him. And where is Duke Caboom (Keanu Reeves)?

Continuity from the Previous Film

Fortunately, some elements are carrying over from the earlier movie. The last thing Woody did before departing for his new life was pass his sheriff badge to Jessie (Joan Cusack), entrusting her in charge of the toy domain. In the teaser shows the insignia pinned to her shirt.

It is hoped she is still the driving force among the group.

Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on June 19, 2026.
