The McLaren driver just pipped fellow driver and title rival Oscar Piastri for the fastest time in the dying seconds of the practice session at the Brazilian Grand Prix. The British racer, who took the points lead from his teammate by one point after taking the win in Mexico City a fortnight back, outpaced the Australian by 0.023 seconds. Before then, Piastri had been the fastest McLaren driver throughout the hour before sprint qualifying due at 6:30 PM GMT. Max Verstappen, the only other driver in the points battle, lying 36 points behind Norris, finished in 17th place as his Red Bull team ran a alternative strategy. His teammate the Japanese driver was the sole competitor to have an incident, albeit lightly, when he lost control at Turn Four early in the session. Tsunoda lost control over the exit kerbs before spinning across the run-off area, and was blessed to escape with just a light touch of the fence. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton also had a spin, at the final moments of the practice, turning around through the high-speed corner leading to the final corner on to the pit straight. The seven-time champion ended the session in 19th place, one place behind team-mate Charles Leclerc. Norris and Piastri were far ahead of the rest of the field, with the German's Sauber third fastest, 0.619 seconds behind Piastri's best. The Aston Martin of the Spanish driver was fourth quickest, with Sauber's Bortoleto in front of the Mercedes of Russell and the Alpine of Pierre Gasly and the Williams of Sainz.
